Kevin M. Harris is a Senior Vice President at The Northern Trust Company, Chicago. He is the Managing Director of the Family Business Group which consists of a team of professionals who manage, value, advise and act in officer and director capacities for closely-held entities held by Northern Trust in either an advisory or fiduciary capacity.

Mr. Harris has extensive experience in income, gift and estate tax planning as well as the administration, management and governance of closely held business entities. Kevin serves in an officer and /or director capacity in a number of companies held in the Family Business Group’s portfolio which Northern Trust holds in a fiduciary capacity. He engages with business owners in addressing their needs and in developing strategies to assist them in achieving their goals.

Mr. Harris assists Northern Trust relationship managers in addressing the “family dynamics” that many times surround the ownership of closely-held businesses. He has also had hands-on involvement with overseeing the provision of advisory services to business owners including engagements addressing strategic planning, governance, business restructurings and the marketing and sale of closely held entities.

He joined Northern Trust in February 2005 after having spent 12 years in the Family Office industry. Most recently, Mr. Harris served in a CFO role for a first generation Family Office and held officer and director level positions in a number of its portfolio companies. He has hands-on experience working with companies ranging from start-ups to mid-size businesses including both organizations that are growing as well as those requiring “change-management.” Previously, Mr. Harris worked in public accounting including seven years with Arthur Andersen, Chicago.

John Honney is a Senior Financial Consultant in Northern Trust’s Advisory Services Group. He works closely with the owners of privately held companies as they evaluate whether to sell or hold onto their businesses. He helps clients assess their options in the context of prevailing market conditions, industry trends and the personal needs and preferences of the owners. He also helps clients understand what potential buyers may demand and expect, as well as how to prepare their companies for the smoothest possible sale process.

Prior to joining Northern Trust, Mr. Honney ran his own advisory services practice where he led private middle market companies through financings, transactions and other corporate development activities. He advised companies in the steel, automotive, branded products, business services and other manufacturing sectors. Previously, he was a member of the faculty of the Kellogg School of Management, where he taught “Venture Capital and Private Equity Investing,” and was a senior member of BMO Nesbitt Burns Equity Partners, a private equity fund which invested in a broad spectrum of middle market companies.

Mr. Honney graduated cum laude from Middlebury College in 1989 and earned an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management in 1995.

He began his career in Goldman Sachs’ Economics Research Group, later joining a boutique investment bank that specialized in distressed situations, where he advised unsecured creditor committees in Chapter 11 reorganizations.

Mr. Honney is an instrument-rated, multi-engine, commercial pilot. He is a member of the Midwest Business Brokers and Intermediaries and serves on the Alumni Admissions Committee for Middlebury College. He also works closely with the North Lawndale College Preparatory High School, helping recent graduates find summer employment opportunities.
